Nitro-S is a homogeneous granular fertiliser product that contains nitrogen and sulphar in each granule. The 7:1 ratio between nitrogen and sulphar makes the product ideal for use as top dressing and/or for use in mixtures. Furthermore, sulphar promotes nitrogen use efficiency, which can potentially lead to more effective nutrient uptake and increased yields. Nitro-S is a high nitrogen alternative to a product such as ammonium sulphate and a single granule product replacement for 1:0:0(40).

NitroPoly-S is a naturally sourced product that has not undergone any chemical or temperature treatment. The product is derived from the mineral polyhalite, which consists of four essential elements for plant development. NitroPoly-S has the unique property of being completely soluble in all four elements – and is released over an extended period for absorption by the roots. Nutrient losses due to leaching are also limited thanks to the rate at which the nutrients are released into the soil solution. Calcium is released evenly over a long period, ensuring that absorbable calcium is available when the plant needs it.
When the release of sulphate is compared between ammonium sulphate and gypsum, rapid solubility is observed with ammonium sulphate. However, gypsum dissolves very slowly, over a longer period, in the solution. Another advantage of using NitroPoly-S is the fact that the product has a low salt index and a neutral pH. NitroPoly-S is marketed as an organic fertiliser product. The granular product (2 to 4 mm in diameter) has excellent spreading characteristics. This is an ideal fertiliser source to be applied together with pure nitrogen, but it can also be used undiluted or in blends.
Urea has been the preferred nitrogen source worldwide for many decades. When its costs are compared to other N sources, urea (46% N) is the cheaper option per kilogram of nitrogen in the product. It is well-known that a significant amount of the urea applied to the soil can be lost due to the formation of ammonia gas, thus contributing to the build-up of greenhouse gases. This volatilisation risk is traditionally managed through practices such as applying urea only when rain is expected or following up on the spread of urea with cultivation actions so that the urea can be covered by a layer of soil.
These days, urea can be chemically treated with an urease inhibitor (NBPT) that helps to drastically reduce volatilisation without the need for immediate incorporation or tillage. The NBPT inhibits the urease enzyme (which initiates the process) when urea granules dissolve on the surface. This helps manage the conversion to ammonia and ammonium in the soil and reduces volatilisation. The Urea product is broken down into ordinary organic components after about two weeks and the urease returns to its normal state. The purpose of this treatment is to retain more of the applied nitrogen in the soil without the need for immediate incorporation or tillage.
